Historic monastery imageSince Ayia Napa is such a touristy resort, much of its Cypriot heritage and older landmarks have vanished, in favour of modern hotels, restaurants and shops. However, there are a handful of interesting landmarks and historical monuments based within the Ayia Napa area, offering a taster of bygone days.

The Monastery of Agia Napa is without a shadow of a doubt the number one cultural attraction in Ayia Napa, and there aren't many to choose from. This important Cypriot landmark is known for its beautiful architecture and cloisters, and stands on the Plateia Seferi, where it contrasts greatly with the thriving tourist scene and nearby clubs and bars.

Ayia Napa Monastery

Address: Plateia Seferi, Ayia Napa, Cyprus
Most tourists choose to visit the monastery in the early morning, when the partygoers have returned to their hotel rooms and the area is relatively peaceful. Built towards the end of the 16th century, the Ayia Napa Monastery was constructed by the Venetians and is in a remarkable state of repair, considering its age. A further attraction that is situated by the monastery's south gate in an ancient sycamore fig tree (ficus sycomorus), which is reputed to be over 600 years old. Look out too for the protective medieval walls, which were originally designed to deter pirates from attacking.

Makronissos Tombs

Address: Makronissos, Cyprus
The Makronissos Tombs are located on the very westerly outskirts of Ayia Napa, in the neighbouring locality of Makronissos. This truly ancient burial sight has been excavated by the Department of Antiquities, who has discovered around 20 different rock-cut tombs. These Neolithic chambers can be reached by a series of steps and it soon becomes apparent that the whole site used to function as a small quarry. Close by, Makronissos Beach is on hand if you find it hard to drag yourself too far away from the sand.
